What does 50/50 e-liquid mean?
Every e-liquid is composed of two main ingredients: Vegetable Glycerine and Propylene Glycol. Commonly referred to as a VG and PG for short, these two ingredients are in every e-liquid be it a shortfilll, nic salt and even a nicotine shot. These are what 50/50 refers to, an equal blend of VG and PG. Along with this, other ingredients such as flavouring and nicotine are then added.
VG and PG - what exactly are they?
Let's break down exactly what Vegetable Glycerine and Propylene Glycol are and how they affect the way you vape.
VG
VG, or Vegetable Glycerine, is a thick, sweet liquid that is often used in e-liquids for vaping. It is produced from soybeans or palm oil and is completely safe to inhale. VG has a somewhat sweet flavour profile and in addition to its sweet taste, VG is the ingredient responsible for producing vapour when it is heated.
Because VG is thicker than PG, sub-ohm devices are required to vaporise them. These are more powerful and can be vaped at higher temperatures. For this reason, e-liquids that contain a high VG content are often preferred by vapers who enjoy large clouds of vapour.
PG
PG is the other common ingredient that is used in vaping, and it has a very different job compared to VG. PG tends to carry flavour better than VG, and as such e-liquids with a 50/50 ratio tend to have more flavour than high VG e-liquids.
High PG e-liquids are better suited to mouth-to-lung vaping due to their thinner consistency. This means pairing it with coils that have a resistance of 1.0 ohm or lower which will create more subtle vapour, similar to that of a cigarette. Depending on the amount of nicotine that is added to the particular vape juice, the throat hit will be either more or less harsh. The higher the PG ratio in an e-liquid, the harsher the throat hit will be. Typically, the maximum amount of PG that will be found in an e-liquid is 60/40 PG/VG.

How do you vape 50/50 e-liquid?
To vape e-liquids a 50/50 VG and PG ratio, you will want to look at using mouth-to-lung vape devices. These can include devices such as pod kits and vape pens.
A good rule of thumb to stick by is to pair any e-liquids that have a 50/50 VG/PG ratio or high PG ratio with vape devices that utilise a coil that has a resistance of 1.0 ohm or higher. 50/50 e-juices are thinner than other types of e-liquid and as such, they don't require a device with a lot of power to vaporise them, allowing them to be vaporised quickly at lower temperatures.
If these e-liquids are used in a more powerful device, they will be vaporised at too high of a temperature and more e-liquid that necessary will be vaporised. This can result in a very unpleasant vaping experience as the throat hit will be far too harsh, and can risk burning out and damaging the coil.
