What are Vape Coils?

Vape coils are an essential component of any vaping device, found inside either the tank or pod. They are responsible for heating up the e-liquid and creating the vapour. Vape coils are made from different conductive metals such as stainless steel or kanthal which allow the e-liquid to heat up more efficiently. The vape coil surrounds the wicking material which is saturated with e-liquid. When the battery inside the vape is activated, it will instantly heat the coil to high temperatures which vaporises the e-liquid that is soaked into the wick. This creates the delicious, silky vapour that allows us to vape.

Unfortunately, no vape coil lasts an eternity. The constant heating and cooling down of the coil will eventually result in it needing to be replaced. This is why vapers also need replacement coils in order to swap out and continue enjoying their favourite flavours.

Coils come in a range of different resistances which dictate the type of vaping experience. The resistances of coils are measured in what we call 'ohms' and these are very important to pay attention to as using the wrong type of coil can result in an unpleasant vaping experience.

Our beginner's guide to vape coils will help to teach you everything you need to know about coils. In the meantime, here are the different types of replacement coils that we stock:

Different Types of Vape Coils

MTL COILS

For MTL vaping, you're going to want to use coils that have a high resistance of 1.0 ohm or above. These are best used for lower-powered devices such as pod kits and starter kits which provide a tighter draw, focused more on flavour than vapour. This helps to create a sensation that is closer to that of smoking, which is ideal for ex-smokers trying to quit or beginner vapers.

SUB OHM COILS

Sub-ohm coils have a low resistance of less than 1.0 ohm, although these days many sub-ohm coils are below 0.6 ohm and can go even lower. Low resistance coils are designed for a DTL vaping style, requiring a more powerful, advanced vape device. These coils use more e-juice than other types of coils, but in return they produce much bigger clouds of vapour. A good rule of thumb is the lower the coil resistance, the bigger the clouds.

PODS WITH BUILT IN COILS

If you use pod kits, we also stock a wide range of replacement pods with built-in coils. Replacement pods include the vape coils and the e-liquid tank. This means that when your coil is burnt or needs replacing, all you have to do is replace the pod and you're ready to vape. Instead of having to replace the coils, you just replace the pod – it couldn’t be simpler!

DIY COILS

If you're interested in some vaping DIY, we stock coil wire for making your own coils for RDAs, RTAs, and RDTAs. Making your own coils can be cheaper and more customisable, giving you more control over the vaping experience. In contrast, pre-built coils are perfect for when you want to enjoy the benefits of rebuildables without having to do the coil bending yourself. We don't recommend jumping straight into DIY coils if you're new to vaping, however, veteran vapers out there are sure to find our range will meet your needs.

We also stock a range of mesh coils to help you get a better flavour out of your e-juice. If you use a sub-ohm tank you probably use mesh coils because these allow a cooler vape and reduce the chances of dry hits.

Vape Coils FAQs

Before looking for your new coil, you need to consider what type of vaping you usually opt for. High resistance coils are the go-to for mouth-to-lung vaping, ideal for ex-smokers or those who are picking up a vape for the first time. If you're more interested in direct-to-lung vaping and exhaling large clouds of vapour, then you want to be using sub-ohm coils.

Now, we're about to get a bit technical here but stay with us. Whilst any coil below a 1.0 ohm resistance is technically classed as a sub-ohm coil, if you're looking for larger clouds of vapour you really want to be using 0.6 ohm coils and below. Replacement coils between the range of 0.6 ohm and 1.0 ohm create what is commonly known as a restricted direct-lung vape which will still produce decent amounts of vapour but will be tighter on the draw.

Vape coils usually burn out after a few days or weeks of use, depending on how frequently you vape. You can tell when they need replacing because the flavour of your e-liquid will taste burnt or less strong or your vapour clouds will be smaller than before. Knowing how to make your coils last longer can help to extend their lifetime and stop you from needing a replacement coil so soon.

A good way to tell when it's time to change your vape coils is when you start to taste an unpleasant burnt flavour when you vape. Other signs it's time for a replacement coil include weak tasting e-juice and smaller vapour clouds. Check out our blog for a more detailed breakdown on how to know when it's time to replace your coil where we go through a range of different signs and important things to look out for.

A burnt coil will give off a burnt taste and produce less vapour than usual. You may also notice a change in colour or texture of the wick, which may appear black or brown and have a burnt or charred smell. If you experience any of these symptoms, it's likely that your coil is burnt and needs to be replaced.

The best coil material for vaping can depend on personal preference and the type of device being used. Some popular materials include Kanthal, Stainless Steel, and Nickel. Kanthal is a popular choice for its durability and ability to withstand high temperatures. Stainless Steel is also a good option as it can be used in both wattage and temperature control modes. Nickel is a common material used for temperature control vaping.

Mesh coils have become increasingly popular in recent years as they can provide a larger surface area for heating e-liquid, resulting in improved flavour and vapour production. They also tend to last longer than traditional coils due to their mesh construction. However, whether or not they are "better" is subjective and can depend on personal preference.

While it is possible to clean and rinse your coil, it is generally not recommended as it can damage the coil and reduce its lifespan. If you're experiencing a burnt taste or poor vapour production, it's usually best to simply replace the coil.
